In this whirlwind of a news cycle, our team has tackled as many angles of COVID-19 as we can think of.
As the crime reporter, I’m used to the whirlwind. But this has been different. It’s not just one person’s tragedy. It’s all of ours. And not just here locally, but the whole world. So as we cover the obvious stories – the case count, the business closings, the job losses – I found myself thinking of a demographic that is often overlooked: our local Spanish speakers.
Since I’m bilingual, I started translating key updates to Spanish and sharing the Hamilton County Health Department’s Spanish press releases. With my mom as my editor, we’ve been able to keep up with the high points.
Our current situation is already so uncertain and often scary. Sometimes it’s just being informed that helps ease our minds. That’s what I hope we can do for the Spanish speaking community as we all try to navigate this new, temporary “normal.”
