A Texas man got in a shootout with sheriff's deputies who pulled him over on southbound Interstate 75 late Sunday in Whitfield County, Georgia.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Dalton Potter, 29, was driving a stolen trailer. When deputies from the Whitfield County sheriff's office pulled him over, Potter fired several shots at Deputy Darrell Hackney from inside his vehicle, according to a GBI news release. Hackney was not seriously injured thanks to his ballistic vest, the release said.

Hackney and Deputy Adrian Gomez returned fire, but Potter was able to speed off. He crashed his truck and escaped into the woods. The trailer was recovered near the Whitfield-Gordon county line, the GBI said.

Potter is armed and dangerous, police say, and a "Blue Alert" has been issued for his capture.

The news release said Potter is a fugitive from justice in Texas, although it did not list his criminal history. According to Texas court records, a Dalton Potter, 29, was convicted of drug possession in 2018 and burglary of a building in 2017.
