From a historical standpoint, the University of Tennessee baseball team has a rather simple goal.

Take one more step than the 1951 Volunteers.

Seven decades ago, Tennessee made its debut in the College World Series. The Vols lost to Utah in their opener but then reeled off four consecutive victories before falling to Oklahoma 4-2 in the championship game.

Tennessee’s 1995 and 2001 College World Series teams produced respectable 2-2 showings in Omaha, Nebraska, while the 2005 Vols went two-and-out.

This year’s Vols, whose 50-16 record includes five consecutive NCAA tournament wins, arrived in Omaha on Wednesday night and practiced Thursday for the first time. Tennessee will open CWS play Sunday afternoon (2 on ESPN2) against Virginia (35-25).
