Artful aesthetic

I recently interviewed one of the co-founders of Common House, the new social club in the Southside, about the envy-inducing decor that helped bring the turn-of-the-century building into the modern age. (Look for that story in next month’s issue.) He told me that he often gets inspired by a single piece which then becomes the genesis for his overall design.

I have a much more nebulous approach, collecting things that strike my fancy but waiting until some seemingly perfect pairing emerges before I commit to any kind of “design.”

After nearly six years in my home, many of those pieces still sit in boxes.

For our first story below, we checked out the homes of several local artists with varying aesthetics. We asked each of them about their approach to design as well as their advice for the rest of us.
