DIY?

Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, my aunt came to visit, and my mom half-jokingly invited her to stay over and help me tackle the flooring project that’s been on my list almost since we moved in five years ago (and probably to prompt me to actually do it). The well-worn Berber carpeting in the downstairs sitting area was showing signs of its age through the dark patches of life that had happened to it over the years. And vinyl plank flooring is so in.

Aunt Sandy has had several houses’ worth of experience completing such projects, the most recent of which was replacing the carpet in her living and dining rooms with engineered hardwood after losing my uncle two years ago.

After no fewer than six trips to multiple stores, and just as many arguments over the benefits of this material vs. that, we were finally ready to get started.

Before we’d even finished the first row, I had a newfound respect for people like the winners of our DIY Contest, Chris and Christi Perry. Flooring was just one component of their project, which you can read about in our first story below.
