A 26-year-old inmate collapsed at the Bradley County Jail and died at a local hospital Monday, prompting an investigation by the authorities.
The man who died, Matthew Crisp, was brought in after a traffic crash around 2 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper initially noticed a speeding vehicle on Interstate 75 in Bradley County. An unsuccessful attempt was made to stop the vehicle, which traveled into McMinn County and crashed, according to the release.
Crisp and an unidentified female passenger were arrested after the crash and transported to Bradley County Jail. Upon the initial intake, Crisp “collapsed in the booking area of the facility, at which time, the jail’s medical staff attempted resuscitation to no avail,” the release states.
Emergency services transported Crisp to Tennova Hospital where he died around 5 a.m., deputies said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was asked to assist in the ongoing investigation into the death.
