Chattanooga's International Market brings variety of art, food and live music to Cooper's Alley

The International Market and More Series presented by Art 120 continues in Cooper's Alley from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

This is the third of four such markets presented in Cooper's Alley, located in the alley off Seventh Street behind businesses such as Cherry Street Tavern and Chattanooga Billiard Club.

There were two International Market and More events in October and a fourth is planned for Dec. 11. The events are part of a broader plan to animate the space, according to Dawn Hjelseth, vice president of marketing and communication with River City Co.

In addition to international street food, the market is celebrating Artists Sunday, a national alternative to Black Friday created in 2020 to encourage people to shop with artists and buy art as gifts during the holidays. Patrons will find a variety of food, live music, temporary henna tattoos and plenty of handcrafted items.

"There's real excitement when you get art into the streets," said Kate Warren, executive director for Art 120, "It interrupts formality and invites people to play along, bringing public spaces to life."

Also at the International Market, guests will experience a wonderland with larger-than-life puppets from Playful Evolving Monsters, Art 120's art cars and live music to enchant children of all ages.

Live performances include: South African/American performer Joel Karabo Elliot, Movement Arts Collective and Wanyä.

Throughout the day, Rhyme N Chatt will host a poetry art car build. Guests can lend a word, phrase, image or feeling to place onto the car. Art car poems will be compiled and read aloud throughout the event.
