‘Ivermectin and Outrage’

Some people criticized our “Ivermectin and Outrage” story – which led Sunday’s front page (and is linked below if you missed it). The criticism was that the story gave too much ink to a family whose approach to COVID-19 treatment was less than scientific.

So I wrote a thread on Twitter explaining why we wrote the story, which comes down to this:

A local newspaper is tasked with covering true stories that are important to our community. It was evident by how much attention this received on social media that our community cared about this story. This story also reflects the reality of where we are in the pandemic.

If you’ve followed our COVID coverage, you know that we have written hundreds of stories about the best – and always evolving – evidence, the importance of vaccination and the issue of misinformation. This story also includes some of that info, but that’s only part of this story. This story is also about a beloved father, brother, husband and Chattanoogan who lost his life. You miss a lot if you’ve only followed this on social media.
