Learning as we go
Growing up, my family spent a lot of time in parks and on trails. And my outdoorsy parents were quick to teach us lessons along the way: where to look for geodes or animal tracks, for example. Or, that most earthworms can regenerate lost segments of their body – a fact that both amazed and horrified me as a child.
Thirty-some years later, in many ways, that education feels just as formative as my classroom learning. As our first story below begins, “School is not always rows of desks facing a whiteboard.”
From forest schools to virtual schools, in this month’s Chatter, we explore the many nontraditional school options available in the Tennessee Valley.
