The year was 1965. It was an era of school chili suppers, barbecues and carnivals.

The photo of White Oak Elementary School students and teachers accompanying this article was published in the Chattanooga News-Free Press on Monday, Oct. 11, 1965.

The school on Altamont Road was just days away from hosting its annual fall fundraiser, a barbecue and carnival sponsored by the PTA that would feature a cake walk, a dart throw, a bingo game and a country store, among other activities.

The photo is part of a collection of vintage newspaper images catalogued at ChattanoogaHistory.com, a website curated by history buff Sam Hall.

The children in the photo, who would be in their 60s now, are identified as winners of a school poster contest associated with the fundraiser. The teachers in the photo are Johnia Carver, left, and Ina Gray.
