Peyton Ogle continues to amaze on the links for Signal Mountain.

For the second year in a row, Ogle won East Hamilton’s Hurricane Invitational. While doing so, the senior set a program record by shooting a 6-under-par 66 on Tuesday at WindStone Golf Club in Ringgold. His score was three strokes ahead of Baylor’s Viktor Stollinger.

Ogle recently committed to Tennessee Tech and continues to prove he is one of the best golfers in not only the city but the state. He has been a part of three state championship teams for the Eagles, who won the TSSAA Small Class title from 2018-20.

“Signal Mountain Eagle golf has a tradition of winning,” Ogle said. “Defending my win at the Hurricane Invitational and breaking the school record against a really strong field made for a good day. I had a chance last year to set the school record and missed by a shot. There is still lots of work left to do with City Prep and state coming up.”

One up, one down

Is it a statistical oddity or a trend?

One week may not tell a complete story, but if the opening Friday night of Georgia’s high school football season is any indication, fans of Region 7-AAAA have quite the fall to look forward to.

Followers of Region 7-AA? Maybe not so much — but then again, it’s early.

Region 7-AAAA’s 6-0 week was highlighted by a trio of quality wins. Cedartown, ranked No. 1 in the classification by some polls, won 27-14 versus 7-AA favorite Rockmart, which had a top-five state ranking. Heritage downed Catoosa County rival and 10-win 2021 team Ringgold by 14, and Northwest Whitfield won 46-17 against Pepperell, ranked in Class A Division I.

Also impressive for 7-AAAA was Sonoraville’s 27-15 win at Pickens, Central-Carroll’s 36-12 win over Redan and Southeast Whitfield — returning to region competition this season — downing Coosa 14-7.

Region 7-AA went 0-7, with projected playoff teams North Murray (49-27 against Dalton), Haralson County (49-3 against Rabun County) and Fannin County (14-7 against Union County) joining Rockmart in losing.

So far, so good

The Arts & Sciences volleyball team started this season 10-0, with five of those victories coming this past weekend at the Hixson Invitational, where the Lady Patriots beat Walker Valley 25-13, 25-18 in the championship match. Notable contributors so far for coach Brandon Lowry’s team include Amanda Gardner, Gracie Lallier, Savannah Moore, Addison Ruder, Emma Schnitzer and Kendall Townsend.

Notable performances

Whitwell senior volleyball player Courtney Zensen had 14 aces in a sweep of Grundy County. … Chattanooga Christian soccer player Lauren Alexander recorded a hat trick in an 8-1 win versus Knoxville Central. … Sale Creek’s Ava Higgins had 18 kills and six aces in a volleyball sweep of Marion County. … Signal Mountain soccer player Ava Duffey scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win at McMinn County.
