Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett arrested for DUI after leaving Bonnaroo Festival

NASHVILLE - Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett says he was charged with drunken driving Friday night after leaving the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Coffee County.

"I was stopped by the Tullahoma Police Department and subsequently arrested for DUI," Hargett said in a statement released Saturday. "Driving under the influence is a serious matter, and I regret the circumstances that led to my arrest.

"I respect law enforcement and will trust the legal process as we move forward," Hargett added.

Hargett was booked into the Coffee County Jail shortly after midnight Saturday, according to booking records. He later posted a $2,000 bail and was released Saturday morning. He has a July 14 court appearance.

Efforts to reach Tullahoma Police officials on Saturday were unsuccessful.

Hargett is a former state House Republican minority leader. He was first elected secretary of state by the General Assembly in 2009 and was reelected in 2013, 2017 and 2021.
