East Ridge City Manager Chris Dorsey resigned Thursday, according to a news release.

The City Council agreed on a severance package of six-and-a-half months' base salary, the release said.

Dorsey took the city manager job in 2019. He was the seventh person to hold the position since 2008.

He previously served as city manager of Red Bank for six years and town manager of Signal Mountain for eight months before accepting the job in East Ridge.

He was terminated by a 3-2 vote of the five-person Red Bank City Commission in October 2011 for undisclosed reasons.

"I don't think he was a strong enough manager," Vice Mayor Greg Jones told the Chattanooga Times Free Press at the time.

Dorsey was terminated from the Signal Mountain position by a 3-2 vote of the five-person Town Council, with the majority saying he failed to meet the expectations of the job.

"Politics are a part of being a city manager, and it's something you just accept as being part of the job," Dorsey told the Times Free Press in 2019 regarding the Red Bank and Signal Mountain firings.

Before accepting the job in Signal Mountain in 2014, Dorsey turned down an offer from East Ridge for its city manager position at an annual salary of $120,000.

A city official Friday refused to disclose Dorsey's current salary to the Times Free Press, stating that a public records request would need to be filed and the city could take up to seven days to fulfill the request.

Although Dorsey resigned, the council could not have removed him for any cause other than misconduct for at least 90 days following a general municipal election in which a new councilor was elected, according to the city's charter.

New Councilman David Tyler was elected Nov. 8.

A special public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, when the City Council will discuss the appointment of an interim city manager, the release said.

East Ridge Mayor Brian Williams did not respond to an email requesting comment Friday.

Dorsey said in a text message that he has no comment on his resignation.
