Here's what the Chattanooga area has to offer this week.
LOST IN TRANSLATION
If you're a Southerner who gets odd looks when you're outside the South, it could be your accent. (We're guessing you've heard that before.) But a survey by Family Destinations Guide, a website specializing in family travel, has found that residents of Rhode Island and Maine are the most misunderstood when traveling abroad. Their regional dialect, known as the Yankee accent, is distinctive for a few reasons: It drops the "r" sound in the middle and at the end of words, which could cause confusion if asking directions to the nearest "cah pahk." They also use a very flat "o" sound, so that "coffee" sounds like "cawffee" and "Boston" sounds like "Bahston." Also, the accent adds an "r" sound to the end of words that end in "a," such as "idear" instead of "idea" and "sodar" instead of "soda." Alabama, New York and Louisiana round out the Top 5 accents most misunderstood abroad, according to the survey. Tennessee's was 15th and Georgia's 20th.
