UTC nursing school wins student choice award

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga School of Nursing has been named the best in the nation by student and alumni voters in the inaugural Top Nursing School in the United States — Student Choice Awards contest launched by the nurse staffing website nurse.org.

UTC's nursing school was recognized along with Washburn University in Kansas and the University of Delaware as the top nursing schools from among those voted best in each of the 50 states. From among the state winners, a panel of nurses reviewed the 50 top schools and used a number of factors to rank the top schools, including reputation, license exam pass rate, tuition and acceptance rate, when available.

In its summary of the UTC program, nurse.org wrote that nursing students who choose UTC "get to enjoy an urban campus and the benefits of a large school." Available programs include a traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing, an online registered nurse Bachelor of Science in nursing, an accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing and five concentrations in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

"The most important thing about this award is that it was supported by our current students and our alumni," Chris Smith, director of the UTC School of Nursing, said in a statement about the award designation. "To me, that indicates that we are doing things well and preparing our students to be able to thrive in the field of nursing. Even those alumni who graduated several years ago still have very positive thoughts about their time at UTC and in the School of Nursing."

The top rated nursing schools in the Student Choice Awards differed from the annual U.S. News & World Report ranking of top nursing schools, which did not include any of the top-rated Student Choice winners in its list of the top 100 bachelor's programs for nursing students. U.S. News & World Report, which bases its annual rankings solely on the judgment of deans and senior faculty members of nursing schools and departments at institutions around the nation who participated in a peer assessment survey, ranked UTC's nursing program No. 154 in the nation.
