Man arrested, hospitalized in Chattanooga after allegedly shooting at officers in Dalton, Georgia

A man has been arrested and hospitalized in Chattanooga after a Friday morning shooting in Dalton, Georgia, according to the city of Dalton and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Eron Naseem Buggs, 23, who was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service on murder warrants from St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and armed robbery warrants from Coweta County, Georgia, called 911 at around 8 a.m. Friday making erratic statements and saying he wanted to turn himself in, according to news releases from the city and GBI.

Dalton police officers were dispatched to The Cliffs Apartments on the 800 block of Shugart Road, where Buggs allegedly fired several rounds at them. The officers took cover and did not fire their weapons, the releases state.

Buggs retreated behind the apartments and went into the woods, where he shot himself, officials said. Officers approached him and began medical treatment on Buggs, who was taken to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton and later transported to Erlanger hospital by Life Force helicopter, according to the releases.

Waugh Street in front of the apartments was briefly closed for public safety during the incident. The road has since been reopened to traffic.

The GBI is investigating the incident.
