Here's a look at the business trends for February in the Chattanooga area, including the restaurant chain Twin Peaks expanding to the Chattanooga area and planners approving one of Hamilton County's largest new residential projects.

What's opening

A Texas-based restaurant chain, Twin Peaks, is expanding to the Chattanooga area with the opening of a fourth location next to the Bass Pro Shops in East Ridge.

Somer Station, a co-working and co-living space, opened in the North Shore area to include 58 offices, along with conference rooms and open meeting areas.


What's closing

Sportsbarn at 301 Market St. shut down at the end of February after 44 years of operation at the location. Sportsbarn's president, David Brock, said the East Brainerd and Hixson locations will remain open.

Bed Bath & Beyond announced plans in February to close its Hixson store on Highway 153. The company will continue to operate its other Chattanooga store on Hamilton Place Boulevard.

A Volkswagen supplier, ThyssenKrupp LLC, announced the closing of its Chattanooga facility with plans to lay off 156 workers within the next three months.

Northside Upholstery announced plans to close after 64 years of operation at at 724 N. Market St. Chattanooga developer John Wise purchased the building for a possible residential development.


What's expanding

Nokian Tyres announced in late February the company will bring in about 125 new employees this year, with the majority of hiring taking place March through May.

Developers confirmed in February the expansion of White Oak Crossing, a retail center in the Ooltewah and Collegedale area. The center will see a new veterinary and pet health provider.


Announced developments

The Home Depot will designate a 60,800-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility at the North River Commerce Park in Hixson.

Planners have approved the construction of 430 single-family houses and townhomes at the former Cigna office site in East Brainerd.

A Nashville group has purchased a line of buildings that make up more than half the north side of Patten Parkway.

Drury Hotels, a Missouri-based hotel chain, has purchased property in downtown Chattanooga that has long held the Sportsbarn fitness club.

Rise Partners recieved a special permit from the Red Bank City Commission to allow a mixed-use development at the commercially zoned site of the former Save A Lot on Dayton Boulevard.

One of the largest industrial parks in the Chattanooga area is being planned south of the Tennessee-Georgia state border along Interstate 75.

Officials at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announced in February an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing degree, an effort to get more nurses in the field sooner.

Nonstop flights between Chattanooga Airport and Miami will return in June, according to airport officials.
