Chattanooga office of Barge Design Solutions wins award
The Chattanooga-based engineering and landscape architectural design team at Barge Design Solutions Inc. recently earned national honors for its work on the City Walk in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Chattanooga office of Barge won an Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for its work in transforming the underutilized space under one of Birmingham’s interstate bridges into an active public space that brings communities together. Barge worked closely with the Alabama Department of Transportation to design a masterplan for the expansive 31-acre, 10-block project to reconnect neighborhoods on both sides of the Interstate 59/Interstate 20 overpasses and includes walking paths, a dog park, a food truck area, sports fields, a playground, water features, a 60,000-square-foot skate park, a Biergarten, pickleball courts and outdoor classrooms.
“City Walk BHAM (Birmingham) connects the urban core of Birmingham to communities previously separated by an interstate overpass in a thoughtful and impactful way, and our Barge Chattanooga team was honored to be recognized and represent this important project at the Engineering Excellence Awards,” said Matthew Stovall, senior vice president and Chattanooga client service leader.
Barge also has led the design of several notable local Chattanooga projects including the Tennessee Riverpark, The Summit of Softball, and most recently the newly opened Little Debbie Park in Collegedale.
