Of the six Hamilton County school board seats up for election this year, two have competitive primaries on March 5.

In District 4, social worker Jackie Anderson-Thomas and activist Missy Crutchfield are seeking the Democratic nomination. No Republican or independent candidate submitted a qualifying candidate petition before the deadline, so the winner of the primary will most likely assume office in the fall. District 4 represents the downtown area.

In District 7, retired business executive Ed Garcia and attorney Jodi Schaffer are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner of the primary contest will face independent David Sean Kelman during the Aug. 1 general election. District 7 represents the East Brainerd and Apison areas.

School board candidates are elected to serve four-year terms.
