ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves added depth to their bench Friday by signing former New York Mets utility infielder Luis Guillorme to a one-year deal for $1.1 million.
Guillorme was selected by the Mets in the 10th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft and made his MLB debut in May 2018. The 29-year-old Venezuela native has a career batting average of .261.
Guillorme has played second base, shortstop and third base in the majors, and he hit .224 in 54 games last season. He appeared in a career-high 102 games in 2022, hitting .273 and making 61 starts at second.
Guillorme will compete with David Fletcher, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on Dec. 8, for a bench spot.
Atlanta traded infield prospect Vaughn Grissom, who spent parts of the past two seasons in the majors, to the Boston Red Sox for left-handed pitcher Chris Sale on Dec. 30. The team announced Thursday that Sale agreed to a $38 million, two-year deal with an $18 million club option for 2026.
The Braves also announced Friday they signed 25-year-old right-hander Huascar Ynoa to a one-year, $825,000 deal, avoiding arbitration. Ynoa, who missed the 2023 season after undergoing elbow surgery, could compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation or a long relief role.
Ynoa, who made his MLB debut in June 2019, was 4-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 2021, when he started 17 games but had his season shortened when he punched a bench after a poor outing and fractured his right hand. He made only two starts in 2022.
