BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee officials announced plans to build a $200 million office complex atop Chattanooga’s Cameron Hill in November 2004.

In making the move, the insurance giant sought to consolidate its Chattanooga staff of nearly 4,000, which had been working in 10 different office buildings. BlueCross officials said having its entire Chattanooga workforce in one place would improve security and save the company more than $3 million annually.

Dan Jacobson, a BlueCross vice president, called the announcement “a defining moment for Chattanooga and our downtown.” As presented, the complex would be Chattanooga’s biggest since TVA opened its $163 million headquarters in 1986.

The plans announced by BlueCross called for five buildings totaling 800,000 square feet, with a parking garage big enough to accommodate the entire workforce. Jacobson said construction was due to start in 2006, and the new offices were set to open in 2009.
