The Chattanooga City Council awarded a $35.3 million contract for repairs for the Walnut Street Bridge on Tuesday, according to a news release.
Southern Road and Bridge will work on repairs “including stripping and repainting the bridge to prevent rust, replacing aging timber decking, upgrading wiring and installing new lighting and security features,” the news release said.
Funding for the project includes $18.8 million from federal resources and more than $16 million from the city’s hotel-motel tax.
The bridge is slated to close from March 2025 to September 2026, officials said. A pre-construction phase will begin on Oct. 31.
“The renovation is long overdue,” Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly said in the news release. “This bridge is a powerful symbol of Chattanooga’s identity and a source of pride for our entire community. City government has allowed this iconic structure to age without the attention it deserves. This renovation is necessary to ensure the long-term safety and enjoyment of a Chattanooga landmark that serves as a vital crossing and gathering point for residents and visitors alike.”
The release also said alternate routes will be available for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Tennessee River, including at least one lane on Veterans Memorial Bridge with added barriers to protect pedestrians.
