Boyd Buchanan’s Gary Rankin put the blame on himself and his staff for the Buccaneers’ sloppy start in the rain Friday night at Chattanooga Christian School.
Nobody on the visitors’ sideline had to take the blame for a loss, though, after the Bucs got going and used two big touchdowns by junior running back David Green to defeat the scrappy Chargers 17-7 and remain unbeaten six games into the season.
The Bucs, who are No. 1 in TSSAA Division II-AA in this week’s TSWA state poll, improved to 3-0 in East Region competition despite the trouble getting their offense going early. A first-and-goal opportunity at the CCS 9-yard line was wasted due to penalties, and a fumbled snap and a sack, resulting in a punt instead of points to start the game.
“We were mixing up some formations and mixing up some packages, and it just got away from us a little bit,” Rankin said after the game. “But that goes down to coaching, and we’ve got to coach them better.”
