Here are 7 keys to dressing for work success

Dressing well is a sign of self-respect and respect for others. Sloppy dress, on the other hand, demonstrates a total disrespect for yourself that spills over into poorer workplace relationships and inferior results. Relaxed dress on “Casual Friday” was followed by work from home “Covid Casual” that came back to the office with the end of remote work. The decline in proper dress for business has led to a decline in professionalism in the workplace I call a “casual mess.”

So, if you want to feel better about yourself, improve your chances of promotion, or enhance your workplace culture, it’s time to revisit the concept of dressing for success that John T. Malloy’s 1977 landmark book, “Dress for Success,” launched.

As legendary speaker Zig Ziglar wisely wrote, “You cannot climb the ladder of success dressed in the costume of failure.”

And Italian billionaire fashion designer Miuccia Prada shares this smart fashion advice, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is an instant language.”

As a trainer who presents workshops on professionalism, customer service and public speaking, I know that 93% of communication is non-verbal. Before you open your mouth, people will automatically judge you. Now isn’t that scary? But it is true! It is essential to understand that perception creates reality because what people perceive about you becomes their reality.

Your most powerful resume is not on paper but instead is in the mirror. Therefore, you should dress for the life and job you want.

As Shark Tank guru Daymond John says, “Good grooming is integral, and impeccable style is a must.” American designer Nicky Hilton writes about this personal style tip for women, “Fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it.”

So, here are 7 key tips specifically to help you truly shine:

Get a Professional Haircut

I used to like just getting a haircut that was quick and inexpensive. But, as my wife said, “You get what you pay for.” Now, I have a personal barber, Justin, at the Max Experience (www.themaxxperience.co) who does a fantastic job! A great hairstyle is the ultimate fashion accessory for both men and women.

Wear Quality Shoes

Good shoes are worth every bit of what they cost. While you can buy less expensive shoes, your sore feet will quickly inform you when you made a poor purchase. Keep your shoes well-polished and use heel dressing to keep them looking sharp.

Ditch the Polo Shirt

Unless you are on the golf course or headed to an outdoors event, this shirt is not appropriate for business. It conveys a message that you don’t take your business seriously.

Dress with Quality

Dress for the position you’d like to land. When wearing high quality clothes, you communicate an unspoken message that you do everything with excellence. Plus, they last longer, look fantastic and make you feel great.

Find Your Style

Find your style and where you can buy what you need when you need. I love shopping at Dillard’s. Their Roundtree and Yorke Gold Label Shirts and Travel Smart pants are comfortable and look great. No matter what you wear, keep your clothes clean and well-pressed. Here’s another great fashion tip–Dillard’s outlet store in Asheville, N.C. is well worth the drive!

Wear Great Accessories

The first accessory for men to understand is facial hair. If you sport a beard or mustache, keep it trimmed so you look sharp. If possible, avoid the scraggly “need a shave” look. Every man should own several classic belts (black and brown) and a nice watch or two. If you wear ties, be sure the tip touches your belt buckle. If you are tall, buy extra-long ties.

Special Dress Tips for Women

* For corporate events, dress in neutral colors in structured dresses or blouses with skirts or slacks.

* Venues outside the corporate world allow more flexibility and creative dress. Let your personality shine through with trendy pieces, bold colors, and trending patterns.

* “Dress casual” is a relaxed mix of the first two. Dress with panache but in a relaxed way. Try wearing a blazer with tailored jeans or stylish, comfortable outfits. Mix in cowboy boots or chic flats. Just have fun.

For both men and women, looking your best conveys the right message before you say a word. Your appearance impacts your confidence, your performance and how others view you — which can open or close doors both personally and professionally.

Investing in your appearance is investing in your future. So, look in the mirror. Does what you see work for you or against you? The choice is yours, so make it count!
