Hoping to unlock a flexible source of energy as power demands grow, TVA and several of its partners are seeking $800 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to speed construction of a small, modular nuclear reactor near Oak Ridge.

If awarded, the money could accelerate the development of a reactor at TVA’s Clinch River site by approximately two years, potentially moving completion to 2033. The agency hopes to begin early site preparation in January 2026, start construction in August 2028 and begin commercial operation in December 2033. TVA expects to know more about the status of its application in late spring or early summer.

“We believe advanced nuclear technologies will play a critical role in our region and nation’s drive toward greater energy security,” TVA CEO Jeff Lyash said in a news release. “Enabling and accelerating this technology will take innovation and partnership, as well as discipline and hard work.

“Nuclear is the most reliable and efficient energy the world has ever known, and TVA is uniquely positioned to help drive this forward,” he continued. “We are committed to working with partners, and this grant would expedite our work as we invest in America’s nuclear future.”
