Good Deed: Food City’s Varney Program recognizes four for volunteerism

Food City recognizes outstanding volunteerism among its associates through the Claude P. Varney Volunteer Recognition Program. This year, four district winners were recently recognized for their outstanding achievements, and a $250 contribution was made to their charity of choice.

“Food City is committed to the communities we serve,” Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.

Two divisional winners will be selected from among the district winners. The division winners will receive a plaque and a $750 charity contribution. Ultimately, one overall winner will receive a humanitarian award and a $1,250 charitable contribution.

The program is named in memory of Food City’s former president and board vice chairman of 47 years, Claude P. Varney, who was known for his compassion and humanitarian services.

The area district winners are:

› Vickie Knight, Food City Store #503, Fort Payne, Alabama. She volunteers at the Fyffe Senior Center, United Methodist Girls Home, Teen Challenge and Youth with a Mission.

› Debbie Jackson, Food City Store #230, Chatsworth, Georgia. She volunteers at the Tim Tebow Foundation and Murray County Mobile Food Pantry.

› Gail Chapman, Food City Store #727, Chattanooga. She volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House, Dalewood Middle School and New Covenant Church Grief Share.

› Randy Williams, Food City Store #739, Cleveland, Tennessee. He volunteers with Big Tom’s Thanksgiving Dinner for the needy and Cleveland High School wrestling, Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Veterans of Foreign War 2598.
