Here’s what’s happening this week in the Chattanooga area.

Take a hike

A Kuru Footwear survey of the best national parks for hiking has landed the Great Smoky Mountains in the top spot out of 63 possibilities. Others in the Top 10 are Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains, Yosemite, Acadia, Olympic, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Zion and Grand Teton. Eight of the 10 are in Western states, and mountainous terrain is a consistent feature across nearly all parks listed. The survey considered such factors as number of trails, miles of trails, average trail rating and park crowd levels. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with 348 hiking trails, has three times more visitors than Yellowstone, at No. 2. In other findings, 65% of Americans say they plan to visit a national park this year, and 83% plan to hike while there. Overlapping multiple states, like the Smokies and Yellowstone do, also helps drive their popularity and accessibility.
