WASHINGTON — Wednesday’s scheduled matchup between the Atlanta Braves and the host Washington Nationals was rained out.

It has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Sept. 16 that will serve as the middle two contests of a four-game series between the National League East Division clubs.

Wednesday’s matchup, the second of a planned three-game series, was called shortly before 5 p.m. There was light precipitation at the time and heavier rain was forecast for the evening.

Atlanta rookie AJ Smith-Shawver (3-2, 2.33 ERA) and Washington’s Trevor Williams (2-5, 5.91) were the scheduled starting pitchers, and the same right-handers are still expected to take the mound for the series finale Thursday evening. The Nationals will try to extend their season-best winning streak to five games after defeating Atlanta 5-3 in the series opener Tuesday.
