Police have asked for donations from the community for help offsetting the cost of acquiring the dogs, handler certification, K-9 safety equipment, veterinary expenses, training aids and deployment gear. According to the donation website, those expenses can cost tens of thousands of dollars per K-9 team.
The department’s fundraising goal is $30,000.
