Man allegedly admitted to killing in text message

A man who was arrested and charged with first-degree murder last week allegedly told Chattanooga police that he had visited the scene of the crime with a gun, and he sent a text message saying he killed the victim.

Nathaniel Colvin, 37, was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence after police discovered a dead body with a head injury at a residence in the 3900 block of Manor Road.

When police responded to a call about a dead man at the residence, they discovered the body of a white male with what appeared to be a traumatic injury to the back of his head, according to an affidavit in the case.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses and identified Colvin as a suspect, according to the affidavit.

Colvin told police during an interview, after he had been read his right to remain silent and right to counsel, that he was not at the incident location. Later, he told police that he went to the location with a gun but said that someone else had shot the victim and gave him back the gun, according to the affidavit.

Police reviewed Colvin’s cell phone records and found a text message that Colvin sent, in which he claimed to have “did the killing.”
