“What is an American?”

That’s the question we asked Chattanooga area high school students for an essay contest to mark the America 250 anniversary.

We received dozens of thoughtful and original answers from students across the region. Look for the winning essays in next Sunday’s Perspective section, and excerpts from other essays that impressed us in the following weeks leading up to July 4.

Send us your thoughts in 25 words or fewer to rant@timesfreepress.com or by mail to our office (address on page F3). Then check back here Saturday for a special edition of The Rant.
