Rusty Wright had one sentence ready, and that was all he needed.

Asked by the Times Free Press about Tennessee Tech football coach Bobby Wilder’s extended criticism of him this week, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coach declined to engage when reached by phone for comment Wednesday afternoon.

“No, I have no response to anything he said,” Wright said.

Wilder opened his weekly news conference — it was the first question he took — by going after Wright, days after his Golden Eagles beat UTC 24-9 last Saturday at Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium. Tennessee Tech, ranked 11th by Football Championship Subdivision coaches and 12th in the Stats Perform Top 25 in this week’s national polls, beat the Mocs for the second season in a row, with the Golden Eagles winning 45-17 a year ago in Cookeville during Wilder’s debut campaign.
