Sonoraville’s wrestling program had three individual champions at the GHSA state traditional tournament Friday night in Macon but came up short in the team competition.
The Phoenix finished third in Class AAA with 164.5 points, well ahead of fourth-place Oconee County (99.5) but behind champion Gilmer (190) and runner-up Rockmart (184.5). Sonoraville was also third at last month’s state duals, where Gilmer was the runner-up by one point to Rockmart.
The Phoenix went 3-3 in individual title matches Friday night, getting wins by Colt Weaver at 170 pounds and brothers Jebb and Jaxx Knight at 195 and 285, respectively. Coach Randy Steward’s team, which won three straight state traditional titles from 2018 to 2020, also had runner-up finishes from Logan Moore (132), Gavin Harper (182) and Draven Peppers (220), while Noah Chastain (106) was fourth.
GHSA tournament officials, in an effort to make up time, elected to not hold fifth-place matches. Those bouts, which included Sonoraville’s Thomas Young (113) and Wade Parker (120), were listed as double forfeits on the brackets.
Coahulla Creek’s Adonnis Sanchez was the runner-up at 106, losing 8-7 to Gilmer’s Juan Rafael. Dylan Galloway earned Gilmer’s other individual title with a 3-1 decision over Sonoraville’s Peppers.
