The three men charged with the attempted murder of Dequan Jamal Duke were identified by surveillance video footage that captured the shooting.
On April 25, officers overheard shots fired near 2300 Wilson Street at the Bayberry apartments, according to court documents. When they responded, they found several spent shell casings near the corner of a building.
Shortly after, Duke arrived at a local hospital in a personal car, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Police on scene at the hospital taped off the entrance to the emergency room and a silver car with multiple bullet holes could be seen near the entrance.
An investigator came to the hospital and spoke with people who were with Duke at the time of the shooting. They told the investigator they had dropped someone else off at the apartments when several black males began shooting at them.
At the apartments, spent shell casings were found to consist of 9 mm, .380 and .40 calibers.
Officers also found surveillance video which allowed them to positively identify Demarcus Hubbard, 18; Tadarius Hester, 18; and Darrien Metcalf, 21, as the three shooters. Police said footage shows each one firing multiple rounds at Duke.
All three are also validated gang members, meaning they have met certain criteria by police such as self-identifying as gang members or using hand signs associated with gangs.
