Edward Baxter Jr.
Edward Leonard Baxter Jr., of Hixson, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010.
He was born Feb., 10, 1925.
Having lived a life full of interest in things, how those things work, how to make those things and often times successfully manufacturing them, Leonard found peace and love throughout his entire life. Though challenged with a war wound suffered in France during WWII, Leonard had a charm second to none which allowed those around him to become equally as interesting themselves. Though he loved and enjoyed many things, he held particular affinity for animals, history, motorcycles and generally having fun which accentuated his unique and encapsulating smile. Leonard also greatly valued his friendships, some lasting more than 75 years. Those who knew him well would revel in the facts and historical significance of life and the world shared only among the closest friends who also shared the same passion. His life was significantly impacted through relationships, his children, his experiences in such a way he was able to choose what is perhaps the most significant choice of life – the choice of salvation. Leonard did battle with a number of physical ailments yet did not suffer in his days and was surrounded by those who love and believe in him as he made his way to heaven peacefully.
Leonard was born an only child to the late Edward Leonard Baxter and Corrine B. Brown. Leonard was married to Dorthea Stage, having two children, Douglas and Elizabeth. Later he was married to Nell Austin, having one child, David Baxter. He was later married to Jane Farmer having no children of their own. Leonard will forever be remembered by his beloved grandchildren Jake, Dulcie and Sophie. He will also always be remembered by his many friends, extended family and those who cared so well for his needs throughout his later years.
Leonard served proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII, 8th Infantry Division, coming home a Purple Heart recipient from a leg shot in France in 1944. Graduating high school from Red Bank, then from the University of Chattanooga as a civil engineer, Leonard went on to work at American Lava and finally retiring from TVA in 1993. From 1958 through 1995, Leonard also owned and operated Baxter Plastics in Chattanooga.
As a long, interesting life is meant to be celebrated, Leonard’s family encourages friends to attend a visitation/memorial service on Thursday, April 15, 2010, from 4 p.m. through 8 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace, Hixson.

Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at Coulter Chapel no later than 1:30 p.m. Friday for the drive to the National Cemetery where Leonard will be laid to rest with military honors.
