Don’t get started alone
Outdoor Chattanooga has a host of programs designed to introduce cycling concepts to beginners. The Road Cycling 101 course teaches the basics of safety when cycling in the city, while the Intro to Mountain Biking course instructs new riders on proper shifting on inclines and hills, how to ride over obstacles, safe crashing techniques, body and pedal positioning and more. Call 423-643-6888 with any questions about the classes and for how to sign up.
Chattanooga has installed bike lanes, and new mountain biking trails are popping up all over Southeast Tennessee. Even if your bike was sold at a yard sale a few years back, there’s no reason not to get in on one of the healthiest and most engaging outdoor activities Chattanooga has to offer.
Getting started
Before setting a tire on a root-riddled trail, start small. Chattanooga’s Riverwalk and downtown area have plenty of options, and you don’t even need to own a bike to start cycling. Chattanooga’s bike share program offers the perfect opportunity to hop back on two wheels if it’s been a while since you’ve tried.
“The Bike Chattanooga program is a great way to be more health conscious downtown,” says Ben Taylor, the city’s assistant transportation engineer. “You could bike on errands or to lunch to start, or maybe spend some time on the Riverwalk.”
