Growing up in a small-school environment, Allison Gehron liked the small-school feel that Wofford College provides in NCAA Division I.
The Arts & Sciences senior recently chose to continue her soccer career at the Southern Conference institution in Spartanburg, S.C.
“I’ve been at CSAS since kindergarten,” Gehron said. “I just couldn’t see myself at a larger school where all I would be was a number. All of the schools I looked at were small, but when I visited Wofford, everybody there was nice. I felt welcomed, and when things fell into place, I knew that’s where I wanted to be.”
Gehron finished her CSAS career with 52 goals and 48 assists. She had 14 goals and 10 assists in her final season, leading the Lady Patriots to the District 6-A/AA and Region 3-A/AA titles. She was twice named all-state.
“I just want to be the best soccer player I can be,” she said. “Hopefully I can further my skills and gain both more skill and confidence in my play.
“Whether playing or sitting on the bench, I want to do whatever I can to help the team.”
Gehron, ranked first in her class at CSAS, plans to major in biology. She was highly impressed by Wofford coach Amy Kiah’s graduation rate.
“She told me that they were graduating six seniors from the team, and that five of them were going to medical school,” Gehron said. “I thought that was outstanding to have that much concentration on academics.”
Now the girl who grew up in a small community will find herself five hours away from home.
“I’m a little nervous about it,” she said about moving away. “It would be different if I were going away for a week or two, but this is for four years. I’m close with my family, so it’s going to be hard, but I expect to grow a lot as a person, and I think it’ll be a good experience.”
