Volkswagen aims to launch a new pickup truck by 2030 to be produced in Chattanooga, according to reports from German business newspaper Handelsblatt and Reuters.
The German automaker’s only U.S. plant is in Chattanooga, where it makes the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. Volkswagen suspended production of the all-electric ID.4 SUV at the plant in April following the expiration of federal tax credits for electric vehicles and slower sales.
Volkswagen declined through a spokesperson to comment on the report of a U.S. pickup truck under development. The reports were based on unnamed insider sources.
It’s too early to know whether Volkswagen would develop the truck by itself or with another automaker, according to the reports. Ford is the most likely candidate as a partner because of existing partnerships with Volkswagen, Europe’s largest automaker.
