ISLETA PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) – Former Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon says he is “honored” to have played a part in opening doors for future black NFL quarterbacks.

Moon said Friday during a New Mexico Bowl press conference at the Isleta Pueblo that all black quarterbacks want is an opportunity to show they can play the position. The Los Angeles-born Moon says he is pleased quarterbacks like Cam Newton and Russell Wilson are getting that opportunity.

The Washington Huskies standout went undrafted and played in the Canadian Football League where he broke a number of records with the Edmonton Eskimos. Moon eventually signed with the Houston Oilers and became one of the league’s first high-profile and consist black quarterbacks in the 1980s and 1990s.

Moon says he also feels “emptiness” when he visits Houston because Oilers now play in Nashville as the Tennessee Titans.
