WHITWELL, Tenn. — A new daily schedule kicked off at Whitwell High School this week fits a period into the middle of the day for students to catch up on schoolwork, get tutoring or even shoot baskets and socialize.

It’s called “Tiger Time.”

The half-hour period targets students who need a little help in math, science, social studies or English, or to talk to a counselor about problems at school, said Benita Cookston, Spanish and world geography teacher and a sponsor of the program.

Individual activities each day depend on how well students are doing in school, Cookston said.

“The kids that are struggling get the extra help they need, the kids that are working hard on their own get the mental break that they need, and everybody does better,” she said.
