U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan this afternoon will announce the finalists for the second round of Race To The Top funding.
Georgia, one of 36 applicants this time, placed third behind Delaware and Tennessee in the first round, and state officials believe chances are just as good for Georgia to be a finalists, and even a winner, in the second round.
Locally, Dade County is the only nearby system to be included in the state’s application for part of the nearly $4 billion in the funding pot. Statewide, 26 systems have signed memorandums of understanding in the second phase of the competition. The winning states will be announced in September, federal officials say.
