Deputies arrest Brainerd High School student with loaded gun on campus

A Brainerd High School student was arrested Wednesday and charged with carrying a weapon on school property, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

Earlier in the afternoon, a school resource officer was told a student had brought a gun to school. The officer located the student, who was questioned and allegedly admitted to carrying the gun, a news release states.

The officer searched the student and found a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun in the suspect’s front waistband, according to the release. Authorities did not name the student.

In an emailed statement, Hamilton County Schools said “appropriate steps” are being taken following the incident.

“The safety of our students and staff is the highest priority for Hamilton County Schools,” the statement said. “As we continue to foster a learning environment where all students can learn and grow, we appreciate the partnership with families, children and school staffs. The safety of our schools is a shared responsibility, and we value the communication we receive from our students and families. When you have concerns, we hope you will share them with us. We appreciate the community’s support as we work together to keep our schools safe.”
