Family, friends and local officials filled the Hamilton County Commission’s chambers Wednesday as five new school board members and one returning member were sworn in.

The board members took the oath of office one by one, swearing to faithfully discharge their duties and support the constitutions of the United States and Tennessee.

“To our new board members, thank you for your willingness to serve, your willingness to look after the 45,000 kids in this county,” Superintendent Justin Robertson said during the ceremony. “It’s not an easy job. We all know that. But what we know is that when this community comes together to serve kids, that we’re better, and we’re working in that direction.”

The board’s makeup is now seven Republicans and four Democrats. It previously had six Republicans, three Democrats and two independents.
