Weekend winners

Johni Broome. Man, that was a relatively quiet hammer-drop Saturday — and potentially a mic drop on PoY candidacy — as Broome led the top-ranked Tigers over Georgia. Broome went 31-14-4 with one turnover in 36 minutes and shot 61% from the floor and 67% from 3. Cooper Flagg will be the better pro, but I can’t see anyway that Broome is not the clear frontrunner for the Naismith award.

Rick Pitino. Dude was exiled and mocked on an endless loop (guilty as charged) for the way things played out and disappeared quickly at Louisville. But he did his penance at Iona and now has St. John’s back among the ranked teams in college basketball. Would I want Slick Rick watching my kids? Absolutely not. Can dude coach a python through a Froot Loop? Heck yeah, he can.

Alex Ovechkin. The all-time great notched a hat trick over the weekend and now is 13 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record of 894, which was once deemed unapproachable.
