The TBI is investigating a fatal shooting by deputies that led to a house fire on Rising Fawn Lane in Ooltewah.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a man firing a weapon, Sheriff Austin Garrett said at a news conference Tuesday, according to a recording of the conference. When the deputies tried to make contact with the man, he began to shoot at them.

The deputies fired back, and evidence led them to believe the man was hit by the return fire. The subject then returned into the house, according to a news release by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Hamilton County SWAT responded, and the man blockaded himself inside the house, refusing to surrender.

“During the course of this operation, we would deploy quite a bit of gas, a less lethal option that we have to extract a person out of a residence,” Garrett said. “It was not successful.”
