Speed cameras are coming to 10 schools in Chattanooga to encourage people to drive more safely, Police Chief John Chambers said Monday.

The cameras will capture license plates and determine the speed of vehicles traveling through school zones, and upon review by a police officer, citations can be issued for people speeding, Chambers said.

The department has not determined which schools will be participating in the pilot program for the cameras, but the hope is that the cameras will be implemented in all school zones in the future, Chambers said.

Chambers said the Police Department, in addition to enforcing traffic laws, promotes roadway safety through education and outreach campaigns.
