Alabama is scheduled to put Gregory Hunt, 65, to death by nitrogen gas on Tuesday for his role in the 1988 murder of Karen Lane.

If carried out, it will be Alabama’s third execution for the year, and the second by nitrogen gas. The state put Demetrius Terrence Frazier to death in February, also by nitrogen gas. In April, Alabama executed James Osgood by lethal injection.

Hunt was convicted on three counts of capital murder by a jury in 1990 that voted 11-1 to recommend he be put to death. Two of the counts alleged Hunt murdered Lane during sexual abuse. The other alleged Hunt killed her during a robbery.

According to court documents, Lane sustained 60 injuries all over her body.

The inmate filed an appeal at the end of May in which he admitted to killing Lane during a burglary but denied that he sexually assaulted her.
