A Chattanooga man who has repeatedly demonstrated an inability to control himself in the heat of the moment was sentenced Thursday to 47 years in prison in connection with a double shooting, Criminal Court Judge Amanda Dunn said.

Every day that Legraine Devon Poston Jr., 35, is in jail or in prison, the public is a safer place, according to prosecutors.

Poston was sentenced to 22 years for second-degree murder, 15 years for attempted second-degree murder and 10 years for the employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony with a prior felony — all three prison terms to run back to back, Dunn said.

His sentence stems from a Feb. 14, 2023, shooting in the area of West 12th Street Court. Poston killed Keyshawn Kidd, 26, and injured Kiara Brooks, 27 at the time of the shooting, after a fight broke out between them.

Brooks wrote an impact statement about the loss of her “loving, caring fiance,” which was read to the court by a Chattanooga victim’s advocate.
