ZURICH, Switzerland — The United States was knocked from the top spot in FIFA’s latest women’s rankings by reigning world champion Spain.
Spain regained the No. 1 position in global women’s soccer despite losing to England in the final of the European Championship tournament last month.
The Americans had been on top since August 2024 after winning gold medals at the Paris Olympics. Spain was No. 1 from December 2023 to June 2024 after its Women’s World Cup triumph.
The latest rankings were released Thursday by FIFA, the governing body for international men’s and women’s soccer.
England, which has won back-to-back European crowns and lost to Spain in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, moved up one place to fourth.
