Employees of the city of Collegedale used a municipal credit card to purchase at least $4,120 of food over six months unrelated to overnight travel, typically a requirement of city regulations, according to a state comptroller investigation published Friday.
The “questionable” purchases, which include $514 at Marco’s Pizza for a retirement event and $240 at Papa Johns for an unknown reason, highlight the city’s lack of policies governing purchases with its cards, the report said.
A city ordinance specifies that employees should make a purchase themselves and request reimbursement after the expense.
The report tracked city credit card purchases between Nov. 27, 2022, and May 23, 2023. City employees regularly used the card to dine out, spending an average of $687 a month during the six months.
